When I booked my trip to Aurangabad, I thought I’d timed it perfectly. Two nights. One day for Ellora Caves. Another for Ajanta Caves. I would then move on to the next location. The itinerary seemed well-planned on paper. Ultimately, I added another day.
It wasn’t because I had missed anything. However, it was because every time I thought I had seen the best of the city, I discovered something new, a fascinating story, or an experience that called for a little more time. In retrospect, I think that staying longer was my best travel choice.
Ellora was never going to be a quick visit
I was certain Ellora Caves would be amazing. I just didn’t understand that rushing would be difficult. The cave complex is made up of several monuments that symbolise Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions, each with its own unique architecture and history. The majestic Kailasa Temple is one of them. I must have circled it multiple times. From every vantage point, I could see another elaborate sculpture, carving, or detail that I had previously overlooked. You don’t just “see” Ellora. You go through it.
Ajanta deserved an entire day of its own
I had initially misjudged the time I would spend at Ajanta Caves. That was my second mistake. I actually understood the nature of the monument once I reached it. Unlike Ellora’s dramatic carvings, Ajanta invites you to slow down and really observe.

The incredibly detailed paintings in the ancient murals, which have endured for centuries, convey stories. I discovered myself standing silently within the caverns, observing facial expressions, hues, and minute artistic details that I would have totally missed if I had been rushing. Some places reward patience. Ajanta certainly does.
Daulatabad Fort turned into half a day
I made a “quick stop” at Daulatabad Fort. It turned into one of the trip’s highlights. After climbing through steep staircases, ancient gateways, protective walls, and hidden escape routes, I truly understood why this fort was believed to be nearly unconquerable. The vast views of the Deccan landscape made every step worthwhile by the time I reached the summit. It was not another fort. It was like going on an adventure.
Aurangabad’s own history was worth exploring
After spending so much time touring nearby historical places, I finally decided to give Aurangabad itself a fair chance. I’m happy that I did. With its tranquil gardens and Mughal-inspired architecture, the magnificent Bibi Ka Maqbara was far more beautiful than I had imagined. As I went around some of the ancient city, I also noticed antique gates, bustling bazaars, and areas where centuries-old buildings still coexist happily with modern life. If you’re open to listening, the city subtly offers its own tale.
I didn’t expect to enjoy the local food of Aurangabad this much
I realised one evening that I did not feel inclined to return to my hotel after seeing the sights. Rather, I wanted to sample some of the city’s food. Rich Mughlai cuisine, spicy Maharashtrian curries, and traditional desserts, all closely linked to Aurangabad, were all introduced to me by that decision. The different ethnicities that have influenced the city over the years are reflected in its cuisine. There is more to history than just monuments. It is occasionally offered during dinner.
Final thoughts
I learned from Aurangabad that not all cities should be rushed. What started as a convenient starting point for travelling to Ajanta and Ellora eventually turned into one of the trip’s highlights. I was persuaded to stay longer than I had intended by the stunning caves, the imposing Daulatabad Fort, the beauty of Bibi Ka Maqbara, the artistry behind Paithani sarees, the delicious local food, and the city’s laid-back environment. And I am glad I did my research and made a hotel booking online to suit both my travel and comfort needs. I had a convenient stay and enjoyed the destination to the fullest.
And by the time I eventually departed, I was relieved that things hadn’t gone exactly as planned. Sometimes, extending your stay isn’t a change of schedule. It’s the best decision you can make.
